2002 HUNTING SEASON'S ELK & RED DEER - July 16 PM
Cervus elaphus
The woods are cooler, but for now, in the early evening, they prefer the shade in the field.
Elk prefer graze, red deer prefer browse, but both are flexible.

The grass in our field looks like a golf course because these deer are grazing it thoroughly.

The red deer on the right is smaller, darker and redder than the young elk hybrid.  He also appears to have something bothering his ears...some sort of insects no doubt.

Life is good.

Now, in mid summer, the bulls are all in velvet and still sociable.

This one's antlers look webbed and thick with velvet. He's got a lot of growing to do yet.

These antlers are pointed at the tips and are fully grown. They'll rub out in the next few weeks.

Then this peaceful scene will become bugling (elk) and roaring (red deer), challenges and fighting.
